How it works
Dry ice cleaning fires solid CO₂ pellets at the surface under pressure. Three things happen at once: the pellets hit with kinetic force, the extreme cold makes grime contract and lose its grip, and the pellets flash instantly from solid to gas.
That last part is the whole advantage. There's no runoff, no puddles, no solvent film left in seams. The only thing left behind is the dirt that came off, and the CO₂ is simply gone.
Compare that to pressure washing an engine bay, where water finds its way into connectors, alternators, and sensor housings and sits there. Or to heavy degreasers, which leave chemical residue and attack rubber and plastic over time.

Dry ice cleaning fires solid carbon dioxide pellets at a surface under pressure. The impact and extreme cold break the bond between grime and the substrate, and the pellets sublimate directly from solid to gas on contact — so the cleaning medium leaves no residue behind at all.
It's the safest option available for engine bays, which is the main reason it's offered. Because no water is introduced, there's nothing to pool inside connectors, alternators, or sensor housings — which is the real risk when someone pressure washes an engine bay.
Neither. The CO₂ pellets are the entire cleaning medium and they turn to gas on contact. Nothing needs rinsing, nothing needs drying, and no solvent film is left in seams to attract dirt or attack rubber components over the following months.
It works well on engine bays, undercarriages, suspension components, drivetrain parts, and heavy grease buildup. It's not the right tool for paint correction, interior surfaces, or delicate trim. If dry ice isn't appropriate for what you're describing, you'll be pointed to the service that is.
Handled correctly it's non-abrasive to the underlying surface — it lifts contamination rather than cutting into the substrate. Technique matters, particularly around aged or brittle plastics and damaged insulation, which is why the vehicle is assessed before work begins rather than blasted indiscriminately.
Pressure washing uses water, and water in an engine bay goes exactly where you don't want it and stays. Dry ice introduces no liquid at all. Pressure washing also relies mostly on force, whereas dry ice combines impact with thermal shock, which lifts baked-on deposits that pressure alone won't shift.
It's loud — compressed air blasting is genuinely noisy, and hearing protection is used. It isn't especially messy in the usual sense, since there's no slurry or runoff, but the removed grime does have to go somewhere and gets collected afterward rather than washing down a drain.

Very much so. Stripping decades of accumulated grease and grime without soaking the vehicle in water or solvents is exactly the situation dry ice suits best — particularly on vehicles where trapped moisture in seams would be the beginning of a new rust problem.
